The district

The City of Dearborn describes West Downtown as a stretch of Michigan Avenue with historic architecture and modern energy, home to Bryant Library and the Dearborn History Museum, and host to the Dearborn Summer Market. The look of the street changed in 2018 when Ford finished Wagner Place: two buildings of offices over retail on the south side of Michigan Avenue, built around the facade of the 1896 Wagner Hotel, with a 373-space public garage. West Village Drive was rebuilt as a festival street that can close for events, and the Dearborn Farmers & Artisans Market moved to West Village Commons that year.

The food scene followed. Most of the places below opened since 2015, several since 2022, and they are spread along Michigan Avenue and up Mason Street rather than packed on one block.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between East and West Dearborn?

Visit Detroit sums it up: East Dearborn is the cultural hub of Middle Eastern restaurants and markets, centered on Warren Avenue and the Schaefer corridor; West Downtown Dearborn is the Michigan Avenue strip of coffee shops and restaurants, with the historic storefronts, Bryant Library and the Dearborn History Museum. The Henry Ford and the Dearborn Inn are on the west side.

Is parking free in West Dearborn?

The city ended paid parking in the two West Dearborn decks between Terry and Howard streets off Michigan Avenue in 2015, and removed the meters in the district's lots. Street meters stayed on Howard, Mason and West Village Drive with one- to two-hour limits at the time. Wagner Place added a 373-space public garage in 2018.

What is Wagner Place?

Ford's $60 million development on the south side of Michigan Avenue between Oakwood Boulevard and Mason Street, finished in 2018: two three-story buildings with Ford offices above ground-floor retail, built around the 1896 Wagner Hotel facade, with a public parking deck behind.

Are the restaurants here halal?

Every place in this guide describes its own food as halal, or serves only coffee, bread and sweets, and each place page says exactly how the business states it. West Dearborn has more non-halal restaurants than the east side, so check the page before you assume.
