Ramadan 2027

When is Ramadan 2027? Expected dates, Eid, and how Dearborn decides

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin Monday, February 8, 2027 and end Monday, March 8, with Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday, March 9. Why the date can still move a day, and what that means for a city that follows more than one calendar.

The dates at a glance

| | Expected date | Can move to | | --- | --- | --- | | First fast of Ramadan 2027 | Monday, Feb 8, 2027 | Feb 9 | | Last fast | Monday, Mar 8, 2027 | Mar 9 | | Eid al-Fitr | Tuesday, Mar 9, 2027 | Mar 10 or 11 | | Eid al-Adha | About Monday, May 17, 2027 | A day either side | | Ramadan 2028 | Jan 28 to Feb 25, 2028 | A day either side |

These are the Umm al-Qura projections used in most published Islamic calendars. For reference, Ramadan 2026 began on February 18 and Eid al-Fitr fell on March 20, which matched what the Fiqh Council of North America announced ahead of time.

Why "expected" is the honest word

Islamic months begin with the new crescent moon. Some Muslims insist on physically sighting it, locally or somewhere in the world. Others, including the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA), use astronomical calculation and publish the dates in advance. The council's rule requires the moon to be at least eight degrees from the sun and five degrees above the horizon somewhere on Earth before sunset.

Both approaches land on the same day most years. When they split, it is by one day, which is why you will see a Dearborn restaurant open for suhoor on a night that a neighbor considers the last night of Shaaban.

How that plays out in Dearborn

Dearborn is the first Arab-majority city in the United States, and its mosques do not all follow one calendar. The practical effect every Ramadan:

  • Announcements come the night before. Mosques post on social media after maghrib once the sighting is confirmed or the calculation applies. If you are planning an iftar reservation for "the first Friday," wait for the announcement before you lock the date.
  • Restaurants run on the local majority. Most Dearborn iftar buffets start on the first day the biggest nearby congregations fast, and suhoor hours stretch past 2 a.m. for the whole month regardless of which day it began.
  • Eid can be a two-day affair. Some families pray Eid on different mornings. Bakeries plan for both.

Winter Ramadans, for now

Because the Islamic year is about eleven days shorter than the solar year, Ramadan moves earlier every year. 2026 and 2027 fall in February, which in Michigan means short fasts of around eleven hours and cold nights. That cold is why the big outdoor late-night events of 2022 and 2023 have given way to indoor and tented gatherings, something the Ramadan in Dearborn guide covers in detail.

Checking a date yourself

  • The Fiqh Council of North America publishes its calculated dates and criteria at fiqhcouncil.org.
  • Most mosques in Dearborn and Dearborn Heights post the confirmed date on Instagram and Facebook the evening before.
  • Any calendar that lists a single, unqualified date for Eid is leaving out the moon.
