Is Baja Fresh halal?

No halal claim

Baja Fresh makes no halal claim. Its ingredient statement shows no lard in the beans, rice or tortillas, but pork carnitas is on the menu and the meat has no halal status.

The longer answer

Baja Fresh publishes an ingredient statement and an allergen statement (checked October 2026). Neither mentions halal.

The ingredient statement is detailed. Black beans and pinto beans are listed as beans, water, a spice seasoning, yellow onions and garlic, with no lard. The rice is cooked with soybean oil, and the flour tortillas use vegetable shortening made from soybean and cottonseed oils. The tortilla used for kids' items lists L-cysteine, and the source is not stated. The grilled chicken is listed as chicken, soybean oil, lime juice, garlic, tamari soy sauce, black pepper and salt.

Pork is on the menu: the statement lists "PORK CARNITAS", and the allergen statement shows carnitas as a filling choice across the burritos. The allergen statement also flags items prepared in a shared fryer.

We found no halal statement or certifier from Baja Fresh for its chicken or steak.

What to check before you order

The chicken and steak carry no halal claim. For bean, veggie or fish orders, ask whether the grill and utensils are shared with carnitas, and ask about the shared fryer.

How we decide

We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
