Is Cava halal?

Some items or locations

Cava says its Spicy Lamb Meatballs use lamb from halal-certified suppliers, but its kitchens do not follow halal practices.

The longer answer

Cava's location pages (checked October 2026 on the 636 Woodward Avenue, Detroit page) answer the halal question this way: the Spicy Lamb Meatballs are made with ground lamb that comes from halal-certified suppliers, and Cava does not observe halal practices in its kitchen, so cross-contamination may occur because the same grill and utensils are used for non-halal meats. The statement does not name the certifier and does not cover the chicken, steak or other proteins. Halal Monitoring Services' guide (updated September 2026) says HMS has not inspected or certified Cava and lists its status as not verified.

What to check before you order

Only the lamb meatballs carry a halal sourcing statement. Ask the location how they are cooked that day, since Cava itself says the grill and utensils are shared.

How we decide

We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
