Is McDonald's halal?
McDonald's USA states that it does not certify or claim any of its US menu items as halal.
The longer answer
The disclaimer on McDonald's US menu pages reads: "McDonald's USA does not certify or claim any of its US menu items as Halal, Kosher or meeting any other religious requirements."
Two franchise restaurants in Dearborn, Michigan used to sell halal McChicken and Chicken McNuggets. They were the only US locations doing so, and they stopped in June 2013, several weeks after a $700,000 settlement of a lawsuit alleging the items were not consistently halal, according to the Associated Press.
McDonald's in other countries is different. McDonald's Arabia, for example, publishes halal certificates for its products, and McDonald's Australia operates some halal-certified restaurants. None of that applies to US restaurants.
What to check before you order
No US McDonald's item is offered as halal. The US menu also includes pork (bacon, sausage). Outside the US, check the local McDonald's website for that country's halal statement and certificate.
How we decide
We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
