Is Barq's halal?
Barq's is a root beer soda, a soft drink and not a beer. Coca-Cola makes no halal claim for it in the US, and its listed ingredients show no alcohol, gelatin or carmine.
The longer answer
Coca-Cola's US page for Barq's (checked October 2026) describes the drink as a "root beer soda" with a caffeine kick. It is presented as a soda, and no alcohol appears in the ingredient list.
The ingredients listed for Barq's Root Beer are carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, sodium benzoate, citric acid, caffeine, artificial and natural flavors and acacia. The page gives the caffeine content as 22 mg per 12 fl oz. Barq's Zero Sugar Root Beer is described as caffeine free and is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium.
The page makes no halal statement, and the Coca-Cola US FAQ index we checked has no halal entry. The flavors are listed only as "artificial and natural flavors" and are not broken down.
What to check before you order
The name is the only beer-like thing about it: check the label and you will see a soft drink ingredient list. There is no halal logo on US Barq's, and regular Barq's contains caffeine while the Zero Sugar version does not.
How we decide
We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
