Is Lifeway Kefir halal?
Lifeway makes no halal claim. It says its kefir is formulated to contain no alcohol, but its collagen smoothies list hydrolyzed collagen with no source given.
The longer answer
Lifeway's FAQ (checked October 2026) asks "Does Lifeway Kefir contain any alcohol?" and answers: "No. We have formulated our kefir to not contain any alcohol and is safe for the whole family!" The FAQ also says all Lifeway Kefir products are certified kosher by the Chicago Rabbinical Council. It does not mention halal.
The ingredient list for Lowfat Plain Kefir is pasteurized lowfat milk, nonfat milk, pectin, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D3 and cultures. No gelatin is listed.
The Probiotic Smoothie with Collagen line is different. The plain version lists pasteurized lowfat milk, hydrolyzed collagen, lactase enzyme, cultures, vitamin A palmitate and vitamin D3. Collagen is an animal product, and the ingredient list does not say which animal it comes from.
What to check before you order
Regular kefir lists milk, pectin, vitamins and cultures. Skip the collagen smoothies unless Lifeway confirms the collagen source to you, and read the label on flavored bottles.
How we decide
We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
