Is Ghirardelli halal?

No halal claim

Ghirardelli makes no halal claim on its website. Its product FAQ says the company no longer uses gelatin, and some squares list vanilla extract among the ingredients.

The longer answer

Ghirardelli's product FAQ (checked October 2026) does not mention halal and names no halal certifier. We found no halal statement elsewhere on ghirardelli.com.

The FAQ does answer a gelatin question: "Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is no longer using gelatin in the production of our products." It also explains that chocolate liquor is ground cocoa bean and "contains no alcohol."

Ingredient lists vary by product. The Milk Chocolate Caramel Squares page lists sugar, whole milk powder, corn syrup, cocoa butter, sweetened condensed milk, unsweetened chocolate, palm oil, butter, sodium citrate, soy lecithin, natural flavor, plant extracts to preserve freshness, salt and vanilla extract. Vanilla extract is commonly made with alcohol, and the page does not say how Ghirardelli's is made. Scholars differ on trace alcohol from flavorings.

What to check before you order

Read the ingredient list for the specific square, bar or baking product. If vanilla extract or natural flavor matters to you, ask Ghirardelli how it is made for that item.

How we decide

We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
