Is Peeps halal?

No

No. Peeps maker Just Born says the gelatin in Peeps marshmallow candies is derived from pork, and that its candies are not halal certified.

The longer answer

Just Born's FAQ (checked October 2026) is explicit: "The gelatin used in our marshmallow candies is derived from pork products." It also says Peeps "are not vegan because they contain pork-derived gelatin".

The company's ingredients page describes its gelatin the same way, as "a protein-rich gelling agent derived from pork" used for Peeps marshmallow. Asked about switching, Just Born says it has tested alternative sources of gelatin and has not found one that gives the same result.

The same FAQ states that Just Born candies are not halal certified and that Peeps marshmallow candies are not kosher.

What to check before you order

Peeps marshmallow candies contain pork gelatin according to the maker. If you want marshmallow candy, look for a brand that states halal beef or fish gelatin, or no gelatin, on the pack.

How we decide

We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
