Is Sun Chips halal?

No halal claim

SunChips makes no halal claim; Frito-Lay says SunChips Original has no animal enzymes and lists several flavors as made without pork enzymes.

The longer answer

Frito-Lay's consumer FAQ (checked October 2026) says many of the cheeses in its seasonings are made with animal enzymes, and that salted-only snacks such as SunChips Original "do not have animal enzymes of any kind". Frito-Lay also publishes a list titled "U.S. Products Made Without Pork (Porcine) Enzymes". We read the archived copy from October 5, 2025 (list dated January 8, 2025) because the live page returned an error. The list says pork enzymes are used to develop the cheese in some of its cheese seasonings and that it names "some Frito-Lay snacks that do not contain pork enzymes". It does not say the snacks are halal, and it does not say that enzymes from other animals are absent. The SunChips entries on that copy include French Onion, Garden Salsa, Chili Lime, Minis Harvest Cheddar, Minis Garden Salsa and the Organic and Black Bean lines. The regular-size Harvest Cheddar bag is not on that copy, so it is not confirmed either way.

What to check before you order

Check whether the flavor lists cheese, and look it up on Frito-Lay's kosher list, which the company says covers snacks free of animal enzymes and flavors.

How we decide

We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
