Is Listerine halal?
Listerine makes no halal claim. Listerine Cool Mint Antiseptic lists alcohol at 21.6%, while the Zero Alcohol versions list no alcohol in their ingredients.
The longer answer
The official US drug label for Listerine Cool Mint Antiseptic, published on the National Library of Medicine's DailyMed site (checked October 2026), lists its inactive ingredients as water, alcohol (21.6%), sorbitol, poloxamer 407, benzoic acid, sodium saccharin, sodium benzoate, flavor and Green 3.
The label for Listerine Total Care Zero Alcohol Anticavity Fresh Mint lists water, sorbitol, propylene glycol, poloxamer 407, sodium lauryl sulfate, flavor, sodium benzoate, phosphoric acid, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate, thymol, sodium saccharin, menthol, disodium phosphate, sucralose, Red 40 and Blue 1. Alcohol is not among them.
Mouthwash is rinsed and spat out, not swallowed, and scholars differ on whether alcohol in a mouthwash is a concern. We report the ingredient only. We found no halal certification for Listerine, whose maker is Kenvue.
What to check before you order
Look for "Zero Alcohol" on the front of the bottle and confirm that alcohol is absent from the inactive ingredients on the back. The classic antiseptic versions list alcohol with its percentage.
How we decide
We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
