Is Duncan Hines halal?

No halal claim

Duncan Hines makes no halal claim. Its Creamy Vanilla frosting lists rum as an ingredient, and the cake mix we checked lists no lard or gelatin.

The longer answer

Duncan Hines (Conagra Brands) publishes ingredients through SmartLabel. The SmartLabel page for Creamy Vanilla Frosting (checked October 2026) lists sugar, water, palm oil, corn syrup, canola oil, and under 2 percent of corn starch, mono and diglycerides, salt, natural and artificial flavor, rum, caramel color and other additives. Rum is an alcoholic drink used here as a flavoring ingredient.

The SmartLabel page for a Duncan Hines yellow cake mix (the Peeps edition) lists enriched bleached wheat flour, sugar, leavening, wheat starch, canola oil, propylene glycol mono and diesters, mono and diglycerides, fractionated palm oil, gums, artificial and natural flavor and colors. No lard, gelatin or alcohol is listed. The source of the mono and diglycerides is not stated.

The Duncan Hines FAQ page does not mention halal, and we found no halal certification for its products.

What to check before you order

Read the frosting label for rum or other alcohol, and check each mix for gelatin or carmine. Scan the SmartLabel code on the pack for the full current list.

How we decide

We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
