Is Land O'Lakes halal?
Land O'Lakes makes no halal claim, and it says the enzymes in its cheeses "vary and may be microbial, animal-derived, or both."
The longer answer
The product FAQ on the Land O'Lakes site (checked October 2026) answers the enzyme question directly: "At this time, the enzymes used in the production of Land O Lakes and Alpine Lace Cheese vary and may be microbial, animal-derived, or both." It does not say which animal, or which cheeses use which enzyme.
Ingredient lists on its cheese pages reflect that. The 2% Milk White American deli cheese, for example, lists cultured pasteurized milk and skim milk, buttermilk, milkfat, salt, sodium and potassium phosphates, tricalcium phosphate, lactic acid, milk protein concentrate and "enzymes", with no source given.
The FAQ does not mention halal, and we found no halal certification claim from Land O'Lakes.
What to check before you order
For Land O'Lakes and Alpine Lace cheese, the company itself says animal-derived enzymes may be used, and the label will only say "enzymes". If that matters to you, choose a cheese that states microbial enzymes or carries a halal mark.
How we decide
We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
