Is Organic Valley halal?
Organic Valley makes no halal claim. It says most of its cheeses use vegetarian, microbial enzymes, with an animal-derived lipase in its Blue Cheese.
The longer answer
We found no halal statement or halal certification on the Organic Valley pages we read in October 2026.
On enzymes the company is specific. The FAQ on its Raw Mild Cheddar page says: "We use vegetarian, microbial enzymes in most of our cheeses. Vegetarian, microbial enzymes are produced by a controlled fermentation process. An animal-derived lipase enzyme is used in only 1 variety of our cheese: Blue Cheese." An Organic Valley blog article on cheese puts it more broadly: "Organic Valley uses vegetarian rennet enzymes in all its cheeses."
For its American Cheese Slices, the product page says "The enzyme used is a microbial based, vegetarian rennet produced from Rhizomucor miehei" and lists the ingredients as organic cultured milk, water, organic butter, sodium citrate, salt, organic annatto and "vegetarian enzymes (no animal-based enzymes)."
What to check before you order
Look for "vegetarian enzyme" in the ingredient list of the exact cheese. Organic Valley says its Blue Cheese uses an animal-derived lipase, and it does not state the animal source.
How we decide
We only report what the company or its certifier has said publicly, and we link to it below. We do not test food, and we do not take a brand’s word from a single franchise. If a location tells you something different from this page, trust the location and tell us.
